Sour Soul – Dust Shop Records (RIP)

Posted on May 9, 2009 by Julius | Share |

I met Gilles aka This One in 2002 when he released the Loop Addicts compilation featuring Infinitskills on his Dust Shop records label. As many of the Laid Back collaborators, he made sure to regularly send us mixes or news about his new releases.

Let’s say Dust Shop was kinda part of the Laid Back extended family. Unfortunately, this is a funeral we are celebrating today as the label is now officially closed… A few days ago, I got call from Gilles asking me if I would be interested in a few copies of the “Sour Soul” 12inch. Little did I know that I was about to receive some 200 records, the remaining stock of the last Dust Shop release.

I still need to figure out what I’m gonna do with those records (let me know if you want a copy) but let’s start with a free digital release of this “Sour Soul” project.

  1. it’s really a shame that even so called dj’s aren’t buying vinyl anymore… that’s why more and more small record labels and record shops have to close… keep on buying vinyl and keep on supporting independent labels and musicians!!!

  2. I think vinyls are niche products… a bit like luxury goods. But i agree independent label should be supported. Maybe they should (next to the vinyl releases) develop their online distribution.

By the way, independent radio stations also need some support ;-)

  3. I’ve been looking all over for this compilation. It’s true hip hop instrumentals at its best, especially Katrah Quey’s “contemplate jat”

  4. Yo man, you mid sending some records South Africa’s way…?
