Little Miss Sunshine #6
Posted on October 26, 2009 by Orsii | Share |Hello my friends,
Another week has passed, which means a new Little Miss Sunshiine episode has been aired. I was inspired to do an all girls show after having attended the Anattitude magazine party in Brussels, and I was surprised by how many artists that have had an impact on me musically were female (don’t worry, it was a rather nice surprise).
I grew up listening to artists such as Nina Simone, Etta James, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, and through them I discovered acts like Jill Scott, Ursula Rucker and Erykah Badu. Looking back, I feel blessed to have so many memories attached to their music, because it shaped me as a person and my taste in music into something I can stand up and be proud of.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Erykah Badu. I was on holiday with my parents in Transylvania and I had managed to catch a really nasty cold even though it was about 35 degrees outside. I remember lying in bed watching MTV when “Didn’t Cha Know” came on and I got goosebumps all over my body (not because I was ill, but because her voice just crawled straight under my skin and hit me my heart like a sharp arrow). The next day I made my parents take me to the mall even though they insisted that I should stay in bed, just so I could buy “Mama’s Gun”. Since then, Erykah has firmly remained as one of my favourite artists and vocalists of all times. (if you check out my last.fm page, you will see that she has had 4.588 plays since 2005, and that number will probably just increase with time)
As I said in the show, one hour is not even nearly enough time to cover all the amazingly talented female acts that grace my/our record collections with their magical and loving presence, but I still think I managed to cover some of my personal favourites of all time in my show.
If you haven’t had the chance to listen yet, I would suggest you do so. It’s a pleasant mix of soulful sounds, jazzy vibes, and a whole lotta girl power. Enjoy and I’ll be back later this week spreading some more sunshiine into your lives.
Much love,

Hej Orsii. Great show. And btw i felt in love with Miss Badu when i heard the live version of “Tyrone”. I love when women take the microphone either for singing, rap or making pure poetry. Peace.
… or to host a radio show ;)
