St Liquor-ish’s New Zealand boogie

Posted on October 31, 2009 by J Bluevibe | Share |

Hello, this is J from Bluevibe studio, stringing a few words together for the peeps at Laid Back. As a new producer I’m always looking for a fresh project which excites me, is something I can learn from, is something I can give something to and is gonna sound killer when it’s finished. When St Liquor-ish asked me to mix his new EP I jumped at it because the gutter mixes were great and it was unlike anything else coming out of NZ.

There’s a few serious beat makers and producers coming out of New Zealand at the moment, taking influences from the US and Europe and really giving it a local vibe unlike anything else. Artists like Electric Wire Hustle and Julian Dyne have been hitting real hard with their latest releases and have really raised the stakes for local producers and artists who want to get their music out there.

I love to make a connection between music and it’s maker, see where they live, what they look like, talk like, dress like and most importantly, what vinyl they own and how do they make tracks. After checkin Jerry’s collection of dusty vinyl it’s easy to see where he gets his kicks and where St Liquor-ish was born. 80’s synth/pop and boogie feature heavily in his vinyl and his tracks are assembled entirely on a Roland MV8000 sampler, very old skool, very organic and very dirty. With the help of a few analog synths, a crusty microphone and some serious sample choppin, St Liquor-ish was born.

J – Who’s your biggest influence on your beat making?
SL – The biggest influence on my beat making is David Bowie, Prince and playboys like that. Also all the forward thinking bedroom beat scientists keep me on my toes, I have lots to learn.

J – Your beats have always got the funk, what do ya put that down to?
SL – I’m very self-conscious about my ability to funk. I’m aware of the funk. I’m trying to funk with every atom in my body when i’m making music. Probably the more I over think it, the less natural its going to sound/feel.

J – What’s with the sex obsession?
SL – Sex music is a noble genre, I’m exploring that until its not fun anymore. My mother isn’t impressed.

J – What’s it like to be a boogie freak in NZ?
SL – The wonderful world of boogie is a special place, that’s where I hang out with my gang. Boogie fans are plentiful in New Zealand, local badboys are spreading the good word. I believe boogie is the golden ticket in regards to making ladies dance and the world a better place.

J – When’s the next heat gonna drop from St Liquor-ish?
SL – The underground heaters “100 Snakes” and “Sexxy” are getting pressed up real soon-ish, so keep your ears peeled for that. These are collaborations with Arizonian heavyweights Reggie Blount and Zackey Force Funk. Apart from that all my gear has crapped its pants so I’ve been concentrating on growing my beard and keeping my nose clean. PEACE!

If you didn’t grab it yet you can download St-Liquor-ish’s first EP “The Lick” and just for you we’ve got a sneak preview of “100 Snakes” from the next release.
