The Find Magazine: Issue 4
Posted on Jan 31, 2011 by TheFindMag | Share |We all know those stories by grandparents about how everything was better in them good ol’ days. The Find Magazine’s crew members are not as old, but they already start to sound like some grumpy reminiscing music enthusiasts. They released physical beat tapes with exclusive instrumentals to take listeners back to the 90’s, they still go crazy about vinyl records and now they are back with Issue Four, a printed music magazine.
These days you get an information overload through smart phones, social media and countless blogs, but I think we all agree on one thing: there’s nothing like reading a music magazine. Kick back on the couch, smell the fresh paper, put on Laid Back Radio, wrinkle the corner of the page and read content selected based on quality control. Just you, the magazine and the music. That’s exactly what Issue Four provides.
Because The Find Magazine and Laid Back Radio could be twins, we present to you this radio show. It contains one hour of tracks by artists that are also featured in Issue Four. That way you get a taste of what’s in the magazine. Listen to this show or order the magazine if you’re in need of some good (new) music.
01.Intro
This is the intro for our Pick Of The Week’s on Laid Back Radio. The sample you hear is Leroy Hutson - Cool Out, which got sampled by many artists. Among them are Freddie Joachim for his remix of Mos Def’s Mathematics, SirOJ for Zelfverheerlijking and DJ Devastate for his track Takin’ It Slow. Last mentioned is actually the version we use for our LDBK intro’s, mashed with Outasight’s Radio, Radio and Coldcut’s Seven Minutes Of Madness Remix of Paid In Full.
02. Full Crate & Mar - Let’s Funk This Motherf_cker (Page 02 -03: Crate Digging With… Full Crate & FS Green)
Full crate’s productions and the sweet voice of Mar, a perfect combination. This song was released as limited 7’’ on Kilawatt Music.
03. Benjamin Diggins - Tea Train (feat. Pseudo Slang) (Page 06-07: Jazz Hop Article)
The last two years a lot of people were complaining about the lack of good jazz hop releases. That changed when Benjamin Diggins from the Netherlands dropped their debut album Wheels On Trees. With underground hip hop duo Pseudo Slang on some songs, Benjamin Diggings delivers the best jazz hop album we’ve heard in years. Essential stuff!
04. Funky DL - If I Had A Day To Live (Page 06-07: Jazz Hop Article)
Released in 1997 on Classic Was The Day. One of my favorite jazzy hip hop songs.
05. Emancipator – Nevergreen (Page 08-09: Emancipator Interview)
Emancipator makes instrumental hip hop with a lot of classical influences. Japanese people love melancholic music like this, so it’s no surprise that his self released CD-R debut Soon It Will Be Cold Enough got an official release in Japan on Nujabes’ Hyde Out Recordings. The song Nevergreen is taken from his second self released album Safe In The Steep Cliffs, released last year.
06. DJ Vadim - The Terrorist (Gaslamp Computer Killer Remix) (Page 10-13: Brainfeeder Special)
I don’t think The Gaslamp Killer needs an introduction. He rocked the world with his crazy dj sets, produced most of the songs on Gonjasufi’s album A Sufi and a Killer and he released two killer 10’’s. Craziness is also something we can hear in his productions. This song is taken from the Ninja Tune XX box.
07. Free The Robots - La Lune (Page 12-13: Brainfeeder Related)
Another L.A. artist. On his first releases we could hear a psychedelic sound with some jazz influences. On his latest album Ctrl Alt Delete the jazzy sound got replaced by electronical blips and beeps, but the psychedelic sound stayed. This song is taken from the second Do-Over 10’’ release.
08. José James - Visions of Violet (Prod. by Flying Lotus) (Page: 10-13: Brainfeeder Special)
My favorite José James song with a nice jazzy production by Flying Lotus. This song got released in 2008 as the B-side of the Park Bench People 12’’. It got a CD release in Japan on the José James remix album The Dreamer For Club Lovers.
09. RLP - Feeel On (Page 12-13: Brainfeeder Related)
Beat music made its way to Japan ! This track is taken from RLP’s Works album, which was released last year in Japan on Oil Works records. Oil works is the label from Japanese experimental electronic musician Olive Oil and is one of the leading labels in the Japanese electronic/beat scene. Their roster includes BUN, Ichiro, DJ Perro and much more.
10. Trainspotters - Fan First (Page 16: World Tour Special / Europe)
Trainspotters are Rewind and Kaplan from Sweden. They are also part of the Random Bastards crew. These bastards fill their days with snowboarding, skateboarding, partying and making videos about it. Be sure to check them out on http://www.randombastards.tv/.
11. Ortega Cartel - To Historia (Instrumental) (Page 16: World Tour Special / Europe)
Ortega Cartel is a hip hop duo from Poland, consisting of Patr00 and Piter Pits. They both rap and Patr00 is also the producer. This instrumental is taken from their second album Lavorama.
12. Mental Abstrato - Quando Ouviu O Meu Samba Feat. Ohmega Watts (Page 19: World Tour Special / South America)
Omig One and Tranquilitas from São Paulo produce samba infused hip hop music under the name of Mental Abstrato. On this song they teamed up with Ohmega Watts, an emcee that means a lot to us because our name ‘The Find’ is inspired by his debut album. Mental Abstrato’s debut album Pure Essence has some real classics on it. Too bad it only got released in Japan.
13. The Herd - The King Is Dead (Page 18: World Tour Special / Australia)
Australia’s number 1 live hip hop band and also founders of Elefant Traks Records. Unfortunately not so well known outside Australia. The song is taken from their fourth studio album Summerland.
14. Ravi Shankar - Don’t do Hard Drugs
Before we play the next track by Wildcookie, listen to these wise words by Ravi Shankar.
15. Wildcookie - Heroine (Main Mix) (Page 16: World Tour Special / Europe)
Taken from the Homegrown 12’’ single released in 2009. Wildcookie consist of Freddie Cruger (a.k.a. Red Astaire) on production and Anthony Mills on vocals. The duo got signed by Thru-Thoughts Records and they will release their first album Cookie Dough on the 21st of February. Can’t wait!
16. Nujabes - Another Reflection (Page 20-21: Nujabes Memorial)
Nujabes, where do I start. This is the artist that got me into hip hop music. I could fill this one hour show with only music from Nujabes and you wouldn’t get bored. He influenced a whole generation of producers all over the globe. He created a whole new scene. Melodic, mostly instrumental, hip hop music. His knowledge of music was endless. It was very hard for me to pick one song, but finally my choice went to this lesser known song, taken from the compilation album Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection. Nujabes tragically passed away on February 26th in a car accident. He was 36 years old.
17. Five Deez - Latitude Tribute Mix (Page 20-21: Nujabes Memorial)
This song is taken from Modal Soul Classics II Dedicated To Nujabes. It’s a tribute album that consists of Nujabes productions remixed/reworked by frequent collaborators of him and got released a few months after his tragic death. This is already the fourth version of the song. The original was produced by Fat Jon and was released in 2001 on Counterflow Recordings. A year after that, a remix 12’’ was released in Japan on Dimid Recordings with remixes by Fat Jon and Nujabes.
18. Shad - Rock to it (Page 24-25: World Tour Special / Canada)
That the interview with Shad in Issue Four is the second interview we did with him, speaks for itself. Shad is by far one of the most consistent modern day emcees. We still can’t figure out which album is better: TSOL or The Old Prince. His first album When This Is Over is also good, but not as good as his two latest efforts. Most emcees suffer from ‘the Illmatic effect’; they release an amazing debut and loose consistency, but it’s vice versa for Canadian emcee Shad. So we can’t wait for his future endeavors.
19. Double Helix - Back 2 Basics (Page 26-27: Surreal Interview)
Taken from the very overlooked 2001 album Soundproof. Double Helix is Surreal, Synapse and DJ Balance. This was recorded long before Surreal made name with the Sound Providers. Unfortunately Double Helix only recorded one album.
One hour of music, but we’re not even halfway through the artists featured in Issue Four. But hopefully this radio show gives you a slight taste of what our magazine has to offer! If you’re a fan of Laid Back Radio, then there’s no doubt about it that you’ll love the music featured in our magazine.
