Monkeys for Nothing, Chimps for Free

I still remember the day in 2003 when Ali told me about some of his friends (Eric, Pat & Louis) and their Infinitskills project. They had just released the “Retaliation” mixtape and their first record. When I first heard their sound, I immediately felt that we were on the same page and the next 8 years proved me right. No way can I remember the countless hours we spent together and the crazy project we launched: covering the city with tape, recording radio shows, releasing music in every format possible, filming documentaries, organizing events, … or simply chilling. We did it all and together.

End 2010, when we decided to stop our weekly radio show on FM Brussel, one of the reasons was that we wanted to free some time to work on other projects. From that day on, Eric & Louis focused on the production of their anticipated Electro-Jazz project “74 Miles Away” in collaboration with pianist Pierre Anckaert and flutist Stefan Bracaval. At the same time, they changed the name of their production outfit to MonkeyRobot.

Before going back to the studio during the winter months to record 74 Miles Away’s 2nd album, Eric and Louis decided to put forward their beatmaking activities. Last Sunday they played a beat set for Lefto‘s show on Studio Brussel live from Pluto Festival (listen to their set - check the pictures) and during the next 7 weeks, they will offer music from their archive vaults as well as new and freshly cut material on their soundcloud account… New tracks will be added every Thursday.

I also asked them to go back to their “Radio Hijack” roots (the name of their initial interventions in the Laid Back radio show) and record a new set. In the pure LDBK tradition that they helped establish this one flows between Jazz-Funk, Breaks, Soul, Library music & Hip Hop to the future beat sound of today.
