David Axelrod and The Mohawks

Posted on November 25, 2008 by Julius

Grammy award-winning producer and A&R for Capitol Records in the 60s, David Axelrod worked with Lou Rawls, Cannonball Adderley, David McCallum and also released a few solo projects in the 70’s. A new generation discovered him in the 90’s thanks to DJ Shadow, Lauryn Hill, Dr. Dre and many others who sampled his tracks. Being mostly a studio guy, it’s rare to see David Axelrod live on stage, but in 2004 he appeared at the Royal Festival Hall in London where he conducted a one off performance of his solo work. A few weeks ago, “Live at Royal Festival Hall” has been released as a CD/LP + DVD by Vampi Soul.

More about David Axelrod.

It’s incredible to hear/see those tracks being played live…
Got goosebumps from beginning till end.

Another release worth to be checked on the Vampi Soul catalog is this Mohawks’ album. Originally released in 68,”The Champ” is a project gathering session musicians around Alan Hawkshaw, library music composer who worked on numerous themes for British television. Heavy bass, hammond groove, tight drums and explosive horns, 40 years later this record is still a great one!

Be sure, you’ll hear tracks form those two releases on the Laid Back online radio in the coming days.
