Playlist and liner notes
Yellow Sunshine - Happiness (Gamble)
Instrumental jam from their self titled album (1973). Arranged by the great Philly-based keyboard player Dexter Wansel who did a lot of studio recordings during the booming Philly-disco era.
Osmar Milito - América Latina (Soma records)
Song taken from the album “Na Trilha de Osmar Milito”. Better known as the sample that Madlib used for “Raid” on the classic Madvillainy album (Stonesthrow, 2004).
Blu & Exile - Simply Amazin’ (Sound in color)
A fresh, nice chopped, soulful cut from Blu & Exile. Blu’s lyrical talents are of the ricter.
Taken from the dope “Below the heavens” album, doomed to be lost in what is now considered hiphop.
Louis Bordeaux - Few words (Appletree records)
Sick beat with a high “Slum Village” feel by Dutch producer extraordinary, Louis Bordeaux. Taken from his debut album released on the fresh Appletree label.
Comfort Fit - In simple words feat. Nicole Hadfield (Swedish brand)
Underrated German producer who dropped a really nice EP “Never look back” in 2007. A wide range of styles and a really nice production make this 12″ timeless.
Sister Sledge - Easier to love (Cotillion)
A classic soul album, incredible production from Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, better known as the Chic-wizards. After they changed their producers, Sister Sledge never made a better album than this classic from 1979.
Milton Wright - Keep it up (Alston)
Dj-friendly track from the album “Friends and buddies” (1975). A must have for anyone who loves music.
Afta 1 - Believe (Aftathoughts)
One of those few post-Dilla cats that are really bringing something fresh. Geniously chopped soul samples, hard hitting drums… What do we need more?
Eric Lau feat Meshach Brown - Hope (Ubiquity)
From the excellent album “New territories” on Ubiquity records. Very soulful due to the fact that there are only female featurings on the LP. This guy from London definetely marks his territory.
Flyamsam - The offbeat (White)
The title of this track speaks for itself. Offbeat drumprogramming, analogue synths, 8-bit processed sounds…where Lotus meets Samiyam. These dudes are inspiring a whole new generation of beatheads and producers.
Otis Gayle - I’ll be there (Souljazz)
A hell of a reggae soul cover by jamaican singer Otis Gayle. Original from the Spinners (or the Detroit Spinners) became a huge succes in 1972.
The blackbyrds - Mysterious vibes (Fantasy)
A real classic, not only for the well known sample used by Kurious, Masters of Illusion and many others. The album “Action” from 1977 put them back on the map after the weak “Unfinished Business” released in 1976.
Kurious- I’m Kurious (Sony)
Way back in 1994, Kurious had an instant hit with this single. Unfortunately his album “A constipated monkey” wasn’t a commercial succes, and he was later dropped from sony records. This is an oldschool track you could repeat all day long.
J-88 - Get it together (madlib RMX)
Under the alias of J-88, Slum Village released the album “Best kept Secret” in 2000 after the release of “Fantastic vol 2″. “Best kept Secret” features b sides and remixes from “Fantastic vol 1″. Here is a dope madlib rmx in the spirit of their debut album!
Ummah - 4 moms (slum village rmx -Barak)
Dope and forgotten instrumental from Dilla.
Heralds of Change feat Oddisee - Show you (Allcity records)
Dublin’s finest duo (Mike slott & Hud Mo) collaborating with underground emcee, Oddisee from the Low Budget crew. This 12″ is wicked!
Loleatta Holloway - Casanova (Black Horse)
Deep soul track by Holloway taken from “Cry to me” (1975). So far the only song that gets my attention on this average disco-soul album, but it’s a killer!
Gil Scott Heron and Brian Jackson - Guerillia (Arista)
Taken from the album “Midnight band- the first minute of a new day”. A real classic all the way. No words needed for this one.
Erykah Badu - Me (Motown)
Nice production by the guys of Sa-Ra on Badu’s long awaited and higly anticipated comeback album “New Amerykah part one”.
Sa-Ra - Forever (Jazzy sport)
Instrumental futuristic funk-soul drenched hiphop, with already 2 dope ass 12″ on the japanese Jazzy Sport label. Rockin it!
